Mini Biography

Shahrukh Khan is an international superstar born on 2nd November 1965 to Mir Taj Muhammad Khan and Lateef Fatima in New Delhi, India. His mother believed her son was destined to be a great actor often citing resemblance between Khan and Dilip Kumar , Bollywood legend. His name literally translated into ‘Face of the King’. Born and brought up in Delhi, he was brilliant student and an all rounder. At St. Columba’s School he won the prestigious ‘Sword of Honour’. After sustaining a football injury in school, he decided started to consider acting as a career. He graduated with honors in Economics from Hansraj College and did his masters in mass communications from Jamiya Miliya Islamia. Khan then went on to study theatre under the reputed Mr. Barry John whom he credits for carving out the actor inside him but his mentor considers his pupil as being solely responsible for his greatness and glory citing Shahrukh to have the perfect combination of ‘talent, perseverance, belief in yourself, a never-give-up-attitude and of course, a bit of luck’; factors needed for success. He began his journey by landing the lead role of a commando in 1988 drama series ‘Fauji’ which was followed by Circus and Dil Dariya. His big screen debut came in the form of ‘Deewana’ where he acted alongside Rishi Kapoor and Divya Bharti and won the prestigious Filmfare award for Best Debut Actor Male. His real debut film ‘Dil Aashna Hai’ released late as the second film of his career. This was followed by hit in the form of ‘Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman’. After a few more films which did badly at the box office, Khan made the unique choice to opt for negative roles and played obsessive, somewhat psychotic characters in ‘Darr’, ‘Baazigar’ and Anjaam. To everyone’s surprise the films were massive hits and Shahrukh earned his first Best Actor awardand was also nominated in the villainous role category. The same year he bagged the Critics Award for best performance in ‘Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa’, a film he often recalls as amongst his favorites. Then it was followed to what would be remembered as one of Khan’s most iconic performances and a film which was India’s biggest hit in 90’s. The ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ was released on 20th October 1995 and it became a landmark movie of his career. The films he did with Yash Chopra banner and Karan Johar like DTPH, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai etc were the only good films in nineties.Karan Arhun, Yes Boss were hits but Khan was criticized for overacting in films like Guddu, Ram Jaane, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustaani, Duplicate, 12Ka4, Dil Se and Asoka all of them flopped at box office. It was then post 2002 he accepted films like Swades, Devdas, Chak De India, Om Shanti Om, My Name Is Khan to prove his acting capability. His inspirations are Dilip Kumar and Rajesh Khannafor acting and his acting bears resemblance to them. His films do overseas well as NRI have developed more liking for him.He was named among the 50 most powerful people by Newsweek in 2005. His statue has been made in Madame Tussaud’s museum. He is quoted by his friends as being one of the most humble and down to earth personalities and is said to be witty. He has hosted many times in award functions. He hosted Kya Aap Satvi Paas Hai but it became a flop show. He also owns production houses ‘Dreamz Unlimited’ and ‘Red Chillies Entertainment’. Khan resides in palatial mansion called ‘Mannat’ in Mumbai, India.
